Evolution of rent a car industry is confused with the evolution of the automotive industry in general. The first car offered for rent was the Ford Model T, the first mass-produced car in history. The pioneer of this industry was U.S. entrepreneur John Saunders, which offered its own car to businessmen that needed a quick transport when they were in his city.
Seeing the future economic benefits, Saunders invested in buying cars they subsequently were offered for rent.
In parallel with Saunders, Walter L. Jacobs has developed his own business in this segment, which had to sell Chicago’s entrepreneur John Hertz, who would take the rent a car service to the next level. Hertz had sold the business to General Motors, which has invested in spreading nationwide car rental service.
Warren Avis was another architect of this industry. Being an U.S. Air Force pilot in World War II, he was unhappy that he could not use a car when you land at airports in the country, and after retirement from military service, he began to invest in this segment. Avis would be the first rent a car multinational brand, surpassing the boundaries of the United States, reaching in the 60s and 70s to have the rental services in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Today, the rent a car industry is constantly expanding, and Avis and Hertz are two reference brands in the industry. They join other global rent a car companies spreading throughout continents with rental points in major airports and beyond the capitals and major cities of the world.
Regarding the rent a car market in Romania, it has developed since 1989, at the begining multinationals made their own rental points. With time, there were domestic rent a car companies that compete with major brands, offering the same services at competitive prices.
Renting a car is a short-term solution for any driver and meets their transportation needs for the available budget. Renting a car goes beyond business segment border, being accessible to those who, for various reasons, need a means of transport available for various occasions at any time, any day. You can rent a car to travel to a holiday destination with your loved ones and the car that you own is not roomy enough for both passenger numbers and in terms of volume boot. If for some reason you are forced to relocate from the place of residence to another city for a short period of time and you need a car to move both in the town and its surroundings, renting a car is advantageous in terms of cost and profit too.
